New Moon in Sagittarius
This New Moon is about Freedom… it’s what we all crave at a very primal level. To be free from suffering, from want… free to be in the moment, to be in joy and wonder of the present, without worry about the future, or grief about the past. This New Moon we are given an opportunity to examine the ways in which we wish we could expand, but may not know quite how to get there. What wisdom, experience, feeling do we crave, and how can we permission ourselves to go on the quest, to be absorbed in it, so that we can dream into our paths forward, to clear the way, so that we can be the light for others. There is no rush getting there… be patient, discerning, humble, and give yourself credit where credit is due. You’ve come a long way, and there is still further to go…
Rx Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus
Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus have been important players as we have been coming to terms with our broken economic system and reevaluating our values as a society. We may be wondering, as these planets move through the sign related to Earth and our resources, when will we see change in these areas? Will we ever experience security and abundance as a society? We have to experience challenges and discomfort, because without it, we would not progress. We must be put under pressure in order to transform. The new Moon is forming a quincunx to retrograde Uranus, which is an uncomfortable aspect, one that may feel like growing pains. Now is a time for reflecting on how we want to rebel against or revolutionize our current systems (or what we would like to see radically change even if we are not sure how we’ll get there). Along the way, we must be compassionate with ourselves and the current state of affairs, recognizing that we are in an awkward phase, that we will surely fumble as we collectively evolve. Jupiter rules this lunar cycle, and he is also retrograde - be mindful in the ways you consume and spend your energy. Question the traditions you practice and consider if these rituals are actually aligned with your values. Try to do things differently this holiday season, and explore ways of celebrating the solstice that feels worthy of your reverence.
Grand Fire Trine - Mars, Chiron, Black Moon Lilith
Mars in Sagittarius is forming a trine to Chiron, which will be exact on Friday but is certainly being felt now… our drive for knowing the truth, for exploring unseen, unfelt parts of ourselves that yearn to be discovered and expressed, is requiring our awareness of our core wounding around our sense of self, how we express our personality, and our relationship to and limitations of our physical bodies. Black moon Lilith in Leo creates a grand fire trine with Mars and Chiron, bringing our shadow work into the mix. Black Moon Lilith represents a part of our unconscious that we project onto others out of shame and rejection of our desires. Now is a good time to notice when you get triggered and their possible sources, to recognize your jealousies which may manifest as criticisms of others. Try a new mental route - try on taking responsibility for your discomfort rather than pinning the blame on others. See if your distaste for another comes from beliefs around your deepest yearnings. You may be weaving stories that aren’t rooted in truth and only serve to perpetuate a victim mindset, which is holding you back from being the powerful, heart-centered, authentic you that you (perhaps secretly) dream of. Lilith is in a close relation to the New Moon in Sagittarius, serving as a connection point between Chiron, Mars and Moon - it’s like a spiral, guiding the aim of our arrow to our wounding, to cut through the stories that no longer serve us, to realize that we deserve our truth, and so does the world around us. We deserve to expand into exactly who we know ourselves to be and beyond… in order to expand we need to feel safe on the ground we stand on, which is the medicine of Jupiter in Taurus. How can we adjust our foundations so that we can sink our roots in deep? As we do the healing work called on by the Grand Fire Trine between Chiron in Aries, Mars in Sagittarius, and Black Moon Lilith in Leo, let Jupiter be your anchor. Deep, effective shadow work, requires a safe, solid vessel.
Mercury Retrograde from Capricorn to Sagittarius
Mercury is at a standstill at 8 degrees of Capricorn, where he stations retrograde just 8 hours after the New Moon. The Sabian Symbol for this degree is “An angel comes carrying a harp.” Lynda Hill (sabiansymbols.com) says,
This degree shows being able to care for others – being there when they need it. It also shows that “Angels” will come when you call on them, when you’re most in need yourself. You may be able to ‘tune in’ and radiate harmony around you, inspiring confidence and joy. This pictures care, generosity, and a fulfilled selfhood. Inspiring people to do their best can bring rewards to all concerned. The trick with this degree can be sorting out whether to trust the ‘tune’ that others sometimes play. Following someone for the wrong reasons can just lead you astray.
My take away from this is that in these seemingly hopeless times, we can find care in the places that we may not expect - we have to be willing to ask for help, which includes turning our gaze to the Cosmos and acknowledging that we can’t do it on our own (we shouldn’t have to, and I promise you we’re not here to go it alone…), that we are ready to release control and receive help from the other side, the infinite, however you name it... In addition, we should seek to find ways that we can be of service, to be a shining light, despite witnessing the world crumbling around us. The work we should devote ourselves to is around being more authentically aligned with our higher purpose. Trust that the path forward is illuminated when we are guided by Spirit. As Lynda mentions, be wary of false prophets and those that want to distract us from our path - we can always anticipate trickster energy during Mercury’s retrograde. The message of this Sabian Symbol also seems to echo the healing signature of the Grand Fire Trine of Chiron, Mars, and Lilith, and is a serendipitous initiation into this Mercury retrograde, as he journeys back into Sagittarius before he stations direct, reinforcing the energy we are seeding on this New Moon…
